Renewable Energy for Improved Livelihood (REIL)
Promoting renewable energy adoption to improve rural livelihoods and community resilience.
Contributing to increased access to clean renewable energy technologies in Kasese District.
Limited access to clean and affordable energy remains a major challenge for many rural households in Kasese District and the wider Rwenzori region. Most vulnerable communities continue to depend on firewood and charcoal for cooking and kerosine for lighting, contributing to deforestation, environmental degradation, indoor air pollution, and increased pressure on natural resources. Women and children are often forced to walk long distances in search of firewood, exposing them to physical risks and reducing time available for education, farming, and other productive activities. At the same time, rising energy costs and limited awareness of alternative energy technologies continue to affect household livelihoods, health, and environmental sustainability.
To address these challenges, CODEA implemented the Renewable Energy for Improved Livelihoods Project to promote access to clean, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions among vulnerable communities in the Rwenzori region. The project strengthened community awareness on renewable energy and environmental conservation while promoting energy-saving technologies and nature-friendly livelihood interventions to reduce pressure on forests and improve household wellbeing. Through community sensitization, and support for clean energy adoption, the project contributed to reduced dependence on biomass energy, improved environmental stewardship, strengthened household resilience, and enhanced livelihoods for vulnerable families.
