Africa Adaptation Initiative (AAI)
Strengthening climate resilience among smallholder farmers through climate-smart adaptation initiatives.
Climate change continues to pose
a major threat to vulnerable communities in Kasese District, where prolonged
droughts, erratic rainfall, floods, and soil erosion are increasingly affecting
livelihoods and ecosystems. In the Rwenzori region, where over 70% of
households depend on subsistence farming, shifting weather patterns have
disrupted agricultural production, reduced water availability, and worsened
food insecurity among vulnerable households. Women and children are often
forced to walk long distances in search of water and firewood, reducing time
available for productive activities and deepening household vulnerability.
Through the Africa Adaptation
Initiative (AAI), CODEA implemented the community-based climate adaptation
interventions in Kasese District to strengthen social and ecosystem resilience
among vulnerable communities. With support from WWF-UCO and collaboration with
local stakeholders, the project promoted rooftop rainwater harvesting,
climate-smart agriculture, soil and water conservation, apiary, and community
capacity building to improve adaptation to climate-related risks. The
initiative also supported access to appropriate adaptation technologies,
strengthens climate change awareness, and promotes multi-stakeholder engagement
to enhance sustainable livelihoods and environmental protection.
Through these interventions,
vulnerable households are improving water access, strengthening food security,
and building resilience against climate change impacts in the Rwenzori region. Let’s
join hands to amplify climate adaptation initiatives, sustainable agriculture,
water conservation technologies, ecosystem restoration, and resilient
livelihoods for vulnerable communities.
